Alvin Martin has taken to his personal Twitter account to express disbelief that the bigger Premier League clubs were not trying to sign Dimtri Payet in the summer, given how well he has played for West Ham this season.
Yeah great business still hard to believe the Big boys weren't trampling over each other to get him ! https://t.co/59XoVIFCEf— alvin martin (@alvinmartin58) January 14, 2016
Payet signed for the Hammers from Marseille, arriving with a reputation as one of the best creative players in Europe.
He has lived up to that reputation this season, with the 28-year-old propelling the East London side up the Premier League table with some truly top class displays.
14 Premier League games have brought a return of six goals and four assists, and there is not a player in the top flight who is more enjoyable to watch that Payet.
If the Frenchman had not missed a spell of the campaign through injury, the Hammers would surely be in the top four right now, rather than only being considered outside contenders for Champions League qualification.
Payet’s form has led many to question how West Ham managed to secure his signature, as surely some of Europe’s biggest teams wanted to sign him over the summer.
This is the point that Martin is making, as he wonders why the biggest clubs were not ‘trampling over each other to get’ the Frenchman when he was available.
Yet, it was the Hammers who secured his signature, and the East London club have been benefitting every single time Payet has taken to the field this season.
