Newcastle have signed Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City.
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Newcastle star Steve Watson has shared his thoughts on the signing of Jonjo Shelvey, admitting that he also wants to see Tottenham’s Andros Townsend arrive at St James’ Park.
He said: “Since the start of the season I’ve really wanted to see a couple of homegrown players in Newcastle’s side, and I think Shelvey certainly comes into that bracket. Looking last night I saw Andros Townsend score a couple, and he’s another player who I think would do really well. If that comes off, that is the type of signing I’d like to see, and I can probably say that for Newcastle fans as well.”
Shelvey was confirmed as a Newcastle player yesterday evening, just hours before the Magpies secured a thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester United.
He will bring a creative threat from midfield, and offers an alternative option to the rest of the Newcastle squad, as long as Steve McClaren can get the best out of him.
The one thing that Shelvey does bring to Tyneside is Premier League experience, with the majority of Newcastle’s signings generally lacking this important trait.
He is homegrown, and knows what it requires to succeed in the Premier League, and Watson has indicated that he wanted to see more homegrown players in the Magpies’ squad.
This is why he also wants to see Andros Townsend arrive at St James’ Park this month, as the Tottenham man is another player with Premier League experience, England international experience, and undoubted talent to impress in the top flight.
With the right guidance he could once again become a star, and his understanding of English football should make the winger a priority transfer target for the Tyneside club.
