Rio Ferdinand praises Fabricio Coloccini tackling on Twitter

Fabricio Coloccini

The Newcastle United defender made an impressive stop on Wayne Rooney.

Manchester United travelled to Newcastle United yesterday for a game that not many would have predicted to be a thriller considering their respective form this term.

However it turned out to be an absolute belter.

Manchester United raced into a 2-0 lead but Newcastle fought back before Wayne Rooney's marvellous strike seemed to have won them the game.

But Paul Dummett's half volley zipped by David De Gea via a wicked deflection off of Chris Smalling to ensure the result ended 3-3.

it was a game full of tops-turvy performances across the pitch apart from one man. Wayne Rooney was superb throughout the game, highlighting his obvious ability in a vintage performance.

He could have had more if it was not for a magnificent tackle by Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini - that even had former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand purring:

Rio was referring to a tackle in the second half. Rooney was one-on-one with the Argentine, jinking and jiving, attempting to get on to his right foot and unleash a strike beyond Rob Elliot.

But Coloccini anticipated the move brilliantly and put in a Paolo Maldini like challe ge to thwart the England captain in his stride.

There was some questionable defending in this game from both teams but amid it all there was this excellent piece of stopping from Newcastle United's enigmatic Argentine.
