Wayne Hennessey's error saw Villa beat Alan Pardew's men 1-0 on Tuesday night to snap a nightmare 19-game winless run in the Premier League.

After 157 days, Aston Villa’s wait for a Premier League win is finally over.

A Wayne Hennessey howler saw Remi Garde’s men beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Villa Park on Tuesday night to secure their first top-flight victory since the opening day of the season.

The Palace goalkeeper allowed Joleon Lescott’s tame header from a Jordan Veretout corner to slip through his hands and over the line just before the hour mark as the hosts held on to seal three crucial points.

It was Garde’s first win in 11 games in charge since replacing Tim Sherwood as Villa manager in early November, ending the club’s run of 19 league games without a victory, and the relief around the stadium was palpable at the final whistle.

The former Lyon boss made five changes from the side which could only draw 1-1 at Wycombe Wanderers in the weekend’s FA Cup third round clash, and the likes of Libor Kozak – making his first league start since December 2013 – showed the kind of drive and commitment that the team had been missing over the first half of the campaign.

Goalkeeper Mark Bunn also kept his place in the line-up over Brad Guzan after starting in the cup, and while he was forced to make just one straightforward save on the night, his celebration at full-time showed just what the result meant to the players involved.

The club still sit eight points from safety at the foot of the table with only 17 games remaining, but there is no question that Garde and his squad will have newfound hope that a great escape might just be on.
