The Magpies first scored through Georginio Wijnaldum, before Aleksandar Mitrovic netted from the spot.
With the atmosphere at St. James’ Park now electric, Newcastle were pushing forward at every opportunity, but it was United who regained the lead when Rooney scored for the second time.
That goal was a hammer blow for Steve McClaren’s side, but they recovered - and smashed in an equaliser in the last minute through Paul Dummett.
Newcastle’s draw has pushed them to within one point of safety, and the quality of their performance has raised optimism around St. James’ Park.
