Middlesbrough eye second Kike deal

Athletic Bilbao

HITC Sport understands Aitor Karanka wants to make sure he has back-up for main strikers.

Middlesbrough have agreed terms with Athletic Bilbao for the loan signing of Enrique Sola - also known as Kike, HITC Sport understands.

The 29-year-old is due in England in the next 48 hours to complete a deal until the end of the season and has been instigated by the fact Boro do not want to be left short of options.

They already have Dave Nugent and the originally Kike in their squad, but Aitor Karanka wanted Ross McCormack as his main target this month.

Fulham look unlikely to do a deal for McCormack, but whilst Boro are not giving up on him - they have decided to bring in additional cover in the shape of Sola - but they remain in the market for a big-name striker.

Sola is something of a fringe player for Bilbao, playing just 15 league games in the last three seasons and starting four games with just one goal for them coming since he joined from Osasuna in 2013.

Karanka, though, will be confident that Sola could perform in the Championship if called upon and he will be happy to add another body to his squad, which went six points clear at the top of the Championship with a win over Brentford.

The Boro boss is still looking for a loan signing to bolster his defence and midfield, with ideally one player covering both roles after they saw Jack Stephens and Bruno Zuculini return to their parent clubs.
