The West Ham United player is being linked with an Upton Park exit.
According to a report from the latest print edition of Spanish newspaper Marca, West Ham United player Mauro Zarate has been in talks regarding a potential move to La Liga club Malaga for a few weeks now.
The 26-year-old has featured 21 times for West Ham so far this season, scoring five goals and providing two assists in the process. But it seems he could be pining for a move away if the latest report is true.
Sport Witness has taken the Marca report and published it online, and in it the Spanish publication suggests that Malaga have been in talks with Zarate’s representatives since December to try to get a deal over the line.
The problem comes in the claim that Malaga want Zarate for free; something West Ham are unlikely to sanction given that he still has 18 months left on his current contract.
When you consider the ongoing injury problems at Upton Park, it seems highly unlikely that Hammers manager Slaven Bilic will wave goodbye to a player who has been called on time and again this season, even if he is not first choice when all his teammates are fit and available.
If Malaga really are holding out for a freebie, they may have to look elsewhere or at the very least bide their time…
