Arsenal scored three goals at Anfield, but let themselves down by conceding the same amount and only coming away with a point.
The Gunners had twice bounced back from Roberto Firmino's goals, leading 3-2 before conceding a late equaliser to substitute Joe Allen.
It was a disappointing way to end, but the goal may have been preventable had centre-back Per Mertesacker thrown his body in the way.
Mertesacker made nine clearances during the contest, but was typically reluctant to get stuck in, failing to make a single tackle or interception. To his credit he did manage to block two shots, Allen's equaliser just wasn't one of them.
Defensive partner Laurent Koscielny did not have a great game either, although has been the more consistent of the two in recent weeks.
The centre-back who really stood out last time Arsenal played Liverpool, was Gabriel Paulista, who did well in the 0-0 at The Emirates.
He continues to be third choice behind the Franco-German pair, but there are a growing number of supporters who would like to see the Brazilian come into replace Mertesacker.
Here is a look at how Arsenal fans reacted on Twitter to his performance...
Gabriel keeps rotting on the bench and he's better at football than Mertesacker #AFC— Kgalabae (@Kgalisto) January 13, 2016
Mertesacker is permanently all over the place. And he's our captain. #afc— Carlo Bessenger (@carlobessie9) January 13, 2016
Mertesacker is the defender version of Arteta we can all see he is finished but wenger will keep playing him till he gets injured #AFC— Samuel Uzo. (@SamuelUzo92) January 13, 2016
That was per mertesacker best performance so far this season.. #afc— Victor (@straightboy97) January 13, 2016
I am questioning my own football knowledge trying to see the qualities in Mertesacker that compensate the obvious downside to his game.— | Ryan ديل | (@RyTheGooner) January 13, 2016
Mertesacker was definitely better than Koscielny tonight who seems to get no criticism from arsenal fans— Alex (@AlexCullen17) January 13, 2016
Honestly don't care if we released Arteta and Mertesacker. Absolute bottlejobs who have no idea what Arsenal means— Jayy (@J_Arsenal21) January 13, 2016
Even if Mertesacker scored a hatrick for us. I would still not accommodate his lousiness. Gabriel deserves more play time.— Stanley (@iam_stance) January 13, 2016
