Report: Steve McClaren having big influence over transfers at Newcastle United

Newcastle United have already brought in Henri Saivet, and are closing on a deal for Jonjo Shelvey.

According to a report in the Guardian, Steve McClaren is being handed a greater say in transfers at Newcastle United.

Magpies bosses have generally not had much too much influence over who comes in at St. James’ Park in recent years.

However, McClaren is reportedly having regular discussions with Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley.

He has stressed to them the importance of not looking abroad for transfer targets, as he wants to bring in British players with experience of playing in the Premier League.

The evidence is that Newcastle’s hierarchy have taken on his advice on board, too.

While Henri Saivet, Newcastle’s first addition of the January transfer window, has not played Premier League football before - most of the other players the club have been linked with do fit in with McClaren’s criteria.

Newcastle are said to be closing in on signing Jonjo Shelvey, while Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin also is an option, according to the Guardian.

Newcastle are currently in 18th place in the Premier League table, and they desperately need their January recruits to hit the ground running.
