Report: Newcastle join race for Florentin Pogba

Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Norwich City are reportedly interested in Florentin Pogba, brother of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Newcastle United are interested in signing Florentin Pogba from Saint-Etienne in the January transfer window, according to The Times.

The British newspaper has claimed that Newcastle’s Premier League rivals, Aston Villa and Norwich City, want the 25-year-old defender as well.

“It is unclear if the French club will allow the defender to leave as Loïc Perrin, the captain, is injured,” adds the report in The Times.

Pogba is the elder brother of Paul Pogba, the 22-year-old midfielder who was famously let go by Manchester United in the summer of 2012.

The youngster signed for Italian giants Juventus after failing to reach an agreement over a new deal with the Red Devils, then managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

Meanwhile, Florentin Pogba has been on the books of Saint-Etienne since 2012 when he joined them from Sedan.

The 25-year-old plays his international football for Guinea, while his younger brother represents France.

In 12 Ligue 1 appearances for Saint-Etienne so far this season, Pogba has created six chances, has a pass accuracy of 80%, and has won 41 headers, five dribbles and 12 tackles.

Saint-Etienne are seventh in the Ligue 1 table at the moment with 29 points from 20 matches.
