Matt Le Tissier says Sam Allardyce simply has to pick Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe has scored nine goals so far this season in all competitions.

Matt Le Tissier has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, which was broadcast on 9 January, that Jermain Defoe simply has to be selected by Sunderland every week.

The Black Cats are struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table, but Le Tissier believes that having a player like Defoe could prove invaluable.

The 33-year-old is a proven Premier League scorer and Le Tissier argues that his manager Sam Allardyce cannot afford to drop him.

"When you have a player like Defoe in your side, and you’re struggling near the bottom, you have to find a way to get him in your team," Le Tissier said.

"He is the best goalscorer in that squad by a million miles, so you cannot be leaving him out. He is their one saving grace."

Defoe has been handed a role as a lone striker in recent weeks by Sunderland and he has excelled.

Many felt that the former England international would struggle to function on his own up front, given that his best form throughout his career has come when he has played in a pair, but his goal-scoring has not slowed down.

Defoe has scored nine times in 17 matches this season, putting him way clear at the top of Sunderland’s striking charts.

His place up front is set to come under more threat soon though, as Sunderland are very close to announcing a deal to sign Dame N'Doye from Trabzonspor, according to a report in the Sunderland Echo.
