The move would make sense, but the way it has come about is odd.
He started the game and played 77 minutes before Leon Osman came in to replace him.
It was his first appearance since April after an injury ravaged 2015.
That has of course put his future in doubt, especially as he is out of contract this summer
Now he has bizarrely been linked with a move to his former club Ajax - by the official Twitter account of the South Africa national team.
They sent out this tweet yesterday:
Steven Pienaar might leave Everton for Ajax Amsterdam, according to his business manager Rob Moore— Bafana Bafana (@BafanaBafana) January 11, 2016
Pienaar joined Everton from Borussia Dortmund in 2007 and re-signed for them in 2012 after a poor spell at Tottenham Hotspur.
Prior to that he was on the books with the Dutch giants Ajax - originally with Ajax Cape Town and then for five years with the Dutch branch of the club.
The South Africa international is currently free to discuss his long-term future with clubs from abroad and a move back to Holland might make sense for his career considering his recent injury problems.
