Don Hutchison gives his verdict on Jonjo Shelvey to Newcastle speculation

St James Park

West Ham United, Manchester City and Crystal Palace are also reportedly interested in the Swansea City midfielder.

Former Sunderland midfielder Don Hutchison has suggested on social networking site Twitter that Jonjo Shelvey would be a good signing for Newcastle United.

Without mentioning the Swansea City midfielder’s name explicitly, Hutchison has backed him to join Newcastle soon and be a success at St. James’ Park.

Media reports

According to BBC Sport, Newcastle have agreed a £12 million fee with Swansea for the transfer of Shelvey. The former Liverpool midfielder will reportedly have a medical with the Magpies today before the deal is finalised.

The Sun reported last month that Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United all want the 23-year-old, while The Daily Star claimed of Crystal Palace’s interest in him earlier this month.

Swansea City tenure

Shelvey joined Swansea from Premier League rivals Liverpool in the summer of 2013. The England international midfielder soon established himself as a key player for the Swans, making 32 appearances in the Premier League during the 2013-14 campaign.

The 23-year-old scored six goals, created 45 chances, and has a pass accuracy of 83% and a shot accuracy of 42%.

The former Charlton Athletic man scored three goals and created 30 chances in 31 Premier League games for the Swans last season.

Shelvey is struggling at the moment, having scored one goal and created 23 chances in 16 league matches for Swansea so far this term.
