Charlie Adam believes Newcastle have made an excellent signing in his former teammate.
Newcastle have clinched the signing of central midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, with the England international moving from Swansea City.
The deal has cost Newcastle a transfer fee of £12 million, report The BBC, and he was at St. James' Park to see his new club take on Manchester United this evening.
While some may consider the fee inflated, Shelvey was regarded as one of England's most promising midfielders when at Charlton Athletic, and Newcastle are getting him for potentially the peak years of his career.
Stoke City ace Charlie Adam played alongside him at Liverpool, and believes the Toon have secured an outstanding talent, using Twitter to praise the deal.
Good piece of business from @NUFC signing JonJo Shelvey today.— Charlie Adam (@Charlie26Adam) January 12, 2016
"I'm surprised they've let him go to a rival team in that position but it's good money and they're making a profit. To ex-players like myself it's a lot of money.
"On his day he is very talented but whatever has happened at Swansea, he seems to have gone off the boil and become very inconsistent.
"He's still young and you would expect a lot more to come from Jonjo Shelvey. This move might freshen him up."
Shelvey certainly has talent, but it is about turning his good performances into consistent ones, similar to Newcastle. He is either the missing piece they need, or club and player are a perfect fit - but not for the right reasons, either way his progress at the club will be intriguing to watch.
