Henri Saivet was signed by Newcastle United yesterday evening.
The Senegalese midfielder, 25, links up with the Magpies from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, having played 178 times for the club at which he started his career.
A highly rated youth striker, Saivet has since transformed into a deeper-lying midfielder, and is arriving at St James’ Park to act as the enforcer in the double-pivot of Steve McClaren’s 4-2-3-1 system.
He brings leadership and solidity to a midfielder severely lacking in such traits at this moment in time, and Saivet - who was occasionally captain with Bordeaux - could prove to be a shrewd signing by McClaren.
The Senegalese international, capped nine times by his country, should easily establish himself in the Magpies’ starting XI, and his arrival has been greeted with praise.
One of Newcastle’s own players has reacted to the transfer, with star striker Ayoze Perez taking to Twitter to welcome the midfielder to Tyneside.
.@Saivet_Henri Welcome to the black and white family! Bienvenu! Bienvenido!— Ayoze Perez (@AyozePG) January 11, 2016
If Saivet can have the same sort of impact at St James’ Park as Perez has had since his arrival, the Senegalese star will become an extremely important player for the Magpies.
