The 19-year-old has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since moving to Villa Park from Barcelona in the summer, and he is still yet to make a Premier League start.
However, Traore has caught the eye of Thompson, who has been left baffled by manager Remi Garde’s decision to omit the winger from the team.
"If he’s got something like that [the assist against Sunderland] in his locker then why isn’t he playing," Thompson questioned.
"There must be something going on in the training ground, because when he’s been fit you’re left thinking ‘why is it you can’t get into the starting line up’?
"He’s got great pace and he can quickly turn defence into attack, yet he can’t get a game."
Is Thompson correct? Should Traore be playing?
Traore has a lack of experience, and the defensive side of his game remains a weakness, but his attacking quality has been evident whenever he has been given a chance.
The youngster appears to be a match winner, and he has the ability to provide the excitement that has been desperately lacking around Villa Park.
With the Villans 11 points away from safety and 19 Premier League matches without victory, it is hardly going to get any worse for Villa if they did give him a chance.
Unfortunately, Traore is currently out injured. But when he returns to health, Garde would be foolish to continue to omit the pacey wide man.
