Martin O’Neill believes Aston Villa should be challenging for titles

Trinity Road Stand - Aston Villa

Remi Garde's side are looking destined for the Championship this season.

Speaking on Matchday Live with Fletch and Sav on BT Sport, Martin O’Neill says that Aston Villa should be challenging for the title not stuck in a relegation battle.

The Villans are currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, 11 points from safety and winless since the opening day victory over Bournemouth.

They are looking almost certain to be relegated to the Championship come the end of the season, and need a remarkable turnaround in form to escape the drop this season.

O’Neill though, says that shouldn’t be the case, and his old side should be competing at the top of the table not the bottom.

“Aston Villa are a big club, a fantastic club. They’ve won the European cup,” he told Fletch and Sav.

“Obviously I think they should be challenging, why shouldn’t they? The setup is absolutely there and they should not be languishing in the position they’re in.”

The problem for Villa at present is that it seems the players Remi Garde has at his disposal are not good enough for the task at hand.

They were busy in the summer in trying to replace Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph, but so far all of those players brought in have looked like wasted money.

Indeed, it will be interesting to see how they fare in the Championship, with there not likely to be many buyers given their performances this seaso
