Mark Lawrenson predicts Newcastle United v Manchester United

Mark Lawrenson believes Newcastle and Manchester United will share the points this evening.

Mark Lawrenson has told The BBC that he believes Newcastle United and Manchester United will play out a draw on Tuesday evening.

The two sides meet at St James' Park both keenly looking for a win, for different reasons at each ends of the table.

The home side are looking to climb out of the relegation zone and pile pressure on Swansea City, putting distance between themselves and Sunderland and Aston Villa in the process.

The visitors are aiming to go level on points with fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur, who face Leicester City on Wednesday night.

Lawrenson predicts a 1-1 draw, adding: "There is no problem with the Magpies' attitude and application but they cannot buy themselves a goal - they have not scored in any of their past four matches.

"Manchester United just about won their third-round tie, against Sheffield United, but they played poorly again and manager Louis van Gaal did not do himself any favours when he tried to defend their performance against a third-tier team. Newcastle drew 0-0 at Old Trafford in August, in Van Gaal's first stalemate of the season. This game also has an uninspiring draw written all over it."

Last season in the corresponding fixture, the Red Devils won narrowly through a late Ashley Young winner, but were made to fight hard for it. Wayne Rooney has two goals in two games in 2016, and may well need to make that three in order for his side to get an important victory.
