Murphy said: “People talk about him needing to be better in terms of his goal output. This goal shows what he is capable of, and he needs to do it more.”
Zaha is well known as a player with a wealth of potential, but for all the 23-year-old’s skills and dribbling ability, his goalscoring record is remarkably poor.
He is having a great season this year, but still has just four goals in all competitions, with his strike against the Saints coming on top of two in the league and one in the League Cup.
He might have a poor record, but Zaha’s actual talents in the final third can be exceptional, as his goal against Southampton proved.
It took fantastic technical ability to ensure his wild volley did not go flying off target, and Murphy has claimed that this goal showed that Zaha can have a goalscoring impact.
The winger just needs to become more consistent with his goalscoring, and start to show that he can hit the back of the net on a more regular basis.
