Villa could only struggle to a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers in the third round of the FA Cup, but Danny Murphy has told talkSPORT that he expects Remi Garde’s men to win the replay later this month.
Murphy said: “You would think Villa should have enough to win the replay. But it was a disappointing second half because after going a goal up you’d think their confidence should have grown in the game, but it went the other way.”
Micah Richards handed Villa the lead in the 22nd minute with a low shot, but the League Two side were awarded a penalty in the second half when Ashley Westwood fouled Matt Bloomfield. Joe Jacobson netted the equaliser, and no further goals ensured the game heads into a replay, set to be played at Villa Park.
The performance of the Villa team was as poor as it has been this season, and the fans were rightfully making their feelings known about their side.
Supposed Premier League players looked no better than their League Two counterparts, and Wycombe have a real chance to secure passage to the fourth round of the Cup by winning at Villa Park.
They will fancy their chances having seen how poor Villa were in the game at Adams Park, but Danny Murphy has admitted that the Midlands side should have enough to make it past their lower league opponents.
There is no doubt that the Villa squad has quality and talent, but the players have yet to show any of these skills, and Wycombe’s fight and mentality will make them a tough challenge.
Murphy believes Villa should win, but the Premier League side need to be at their best to ensure their season doesn’t go from bad to worse.
