The Villans are expected to be busy in the transfer window this month.
The Villans are expected to be busy in January, with Remi Garde thought to be looking at improving several positions to try and turn things around.
They are currently bottom of the Premier League table, 11 points from safety and without a win since the opening day defeat of Bournemouth.
New players could provide them with the boost they need to mount an unlikely escape from relegation, and Curbishley says someone who can play in several positions should be top of their wish list.
“They need a versatile player, someone who can cover a few positions,” he told premierleague.com.
“That would come in handy to bolster the squad, as opposed to someone just coming in and being dedicated to one position.”
The problem for Garde will be convincing players to come to Villa Park given the situation they currently find themselves in.
Players are not likely to fancy a relegation battle, nor the prospect of playing in the Championship next season, which is looking like a certainty rather than a possibility.
The January window is also notoriously difficult to work in, with prices for players often inflated and club’s unwilling to sell in the middle of a campaign.
That means Garde could find himself a frustrated man as he seeks to improve his side this month.
