Report: German club joins the race to sign Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy

Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa and Roma have been linked with Mathieu Debuchy.

According to The Sun, German club Bayer Leverkusen have joined the race to sign Arsenal’s out of favour right-back Mathieu Debuchy in the January transfer window.

The report accredits both Aston Villa and Roma as suitors for the experienced right-back but now Leverkusen have joined the hunt and are cited as favourites to take him on loan.

“Mathieu Debuchy has a choice of three clubs as he is set to leave Arsenal this month on loan. Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa and Roma are in the hunt for the right-back,” The Sun claims.

Debuchy has lost his way somewhat at Arsenal, first picking up a season-ending injury last year before being displaced as the club’s number one right-back by Hector Bellerin in the current campaign.

The former Newcastle United star has managed just a handful of appearances this season, a situation which puts him in a vulnerable spot ahead of the European Championships this summer.

The France international will be desperate to play a part in the prestigious event, yet a failure to secure first-team football could jeopardise his chances of making France’s main squad.

The report goes on to say that Debuchy’s preference would be to stay in England; however the only club showing an interest at present is Villa who currently sit at the bottom of the table.

The Villans could certainly offer the right-back first-team football, yet their struggles could end up having a negative effect on the player as they look sure-fire favourites to go down.
