According to a report by WalesOnline, Newcastle United have expressed a keen interest in signing Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shlevey during the January transfer window.
The Welsh publication report that the Magpies are hopeful of sealing a £10million deal for the former Liverpool star as they seek much-needed reinforcements this month.
Caretaker boss Alan Curtis, however, would like the player to stay and told reporters for WalesOnline how he feels the midfielder still has a big part to play at the Liberty Stadium.
"I would want him to stay," he explained. "I spoke to him this morning. I think he’s got a huge part to play. We feel he’s a huge part of what could be a difficult run-in but one we’re looking forward to.
Despite links of a move away from the club, Swansea were not prepared to leave Shelvey out of their FA Cup squad as he featured during the Welsh club’s shock 3-2 defeat at Oxford United.
The League Two outfit pulled off the biggest shock of the weekend as they performed exceedingly well, hitting Swansea on the counterattack a number of times and creating plenty of chances.
Shelvey featured throughout, playing the full 90 minutes which was of interest to Newcastle’s fans.
The 23-year-old England international is a superb passer of the ball and likes to instigate attacks from deep, a player very much missing from Steve McClaren's current Newcastle squad.
However, Shelvey does have a tendency to over complicate matters and there is an inconsistency about his game which leaves many supporters who see his natural ability frustrated.
The Magpies’ fans were keen observers of his performance against Oxford, and on Twitter he caused somewhat of a great divide as to whether he would be a good option or not.
After seeing Shelvey playing today and of recent i wouldn't go near him for 10m mind, doesn't seems to have a great attitude either.. #nufc— Chris. (@nufc_chris) January 10, 2016
Seen people say they would like us to sign Shelvey, looked a decent player. You never really know though do you? #NUFC— Spirit of '69 (@_Spirit_Of_69) January 10, 2016
I agree that shelvey is a good player but the man can't get a game at Swansea and the 10m figure being thrown around seem outrageous #NUFC— Scott Bricklaying (@Scotthebricky) January 10, 2016
We need to try and get Shelvey. Always got that killer pass in him from deep that we lack. #NUFC— Craig Robertson (@CraigR_obertson) January 10, 2016
if you honestly all think Shelvey is the answer to our problems then you don't know football #nufc— Mark Douglas (@markattias) January 10, 2016
