He was once praised and adored by fans and neutrals alike. Now, however, Wanyama is public enemy number one at St Mary's.
Indeed, after Southampton's 2-1 FA Cup loss to Crystal Palace, there were some positives for the South Coast club. The big one was the performance of Oriol Romeu.
The midfielder ran the show for the Saints and scored once again for Ronald Koeman's men. What does that mean for Wanyama? Well, supporters want the 24-year-old to start for their side instead of the Kenyan.
Wanyama's Southampton future remains unclear for now but Romeu's is shining bright. If Koeman's side are to reverse their fortunes this season, the Spaniard will likely play a big part in it.
Despite his efforts, Crystal Palace were still winners at the expense of Southampton, which means there is no longer any chance of silverware for the Saints this term. But the battle to straighten their Premier League form out will probably be enough for now...
Here's how Southampton fans reacted on Twitter to Romeu's display v Palace:
However, the influence of Oriol Romeu cannot be underestimated. He had a superb game and deserves to start more than Wanyama. #SaintsFC— Luke Osman (@LukeOsmanRS) January 9, 2016
Romeu was the best player on the pitch today for both sides #saintsfc— Alex Goodall (@alexgoodall17) January 9, 2016
See Romeu needs to start every week. He does more than Wanyama does. #saintsfc— Jay™ (@ManLikeGranty) January 9, 2016
@XPREDITOR101 mane and wanyama should be dropped or sold Romeu played well and actually scored we do need one or two big signings— TempahionZ (@AndrewMotteram) January 9, 2016
@AndrewMotteram I agree Romeu and Claise were good together could of been a lot worse with wanyama being out of position and walking back— XPREDITOR101 (@XPREDITOR101) January 9, 2016
@jase1962 I thought romeu had a decent game as well. I think I'd give him a run in the side now ahead of wanyama.— Alan Clements (@thefoodstop) January 9, 2016
