A club-record bid from Newcastle reportedly remains on the table for the West Brom forward.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is willing to bankroll a club-record £18 million bid for West Brom forward Saido Berahino, according to the Daily Mail.

Indeed, the Magpies are said to have made the same offer for Berahino in the summer - and it is reportedly still on the table.

The Mail suggest Ashley is happy to pursue the 22-year-old Baggies forward, who can play out wide and as a striker, due to Newcastle's lack of goals seriously threatening their Premier League status.

Berahino's value looks to have dropped since last summer and other interested rivals might not be willing to pay as much.

But this report suggests Newcastle could gain an advantage by keeping their bid at exactly the same level as last summer, even if it has in the past been exceeded.

Whether the 22-year-old can thrive at St James' Park is another matter, of course. At West Brom, Berahino is currently out of form and fitness, having lacked game time in recent weeks.

The Magpies might need to take a risk, however, as their goal tally is simply far too low to leave unattended. Even if Newcastle should have just signed another striker back in August.
