According to a report by Italian transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio, Crystal Palace are set to launch a €15 million [£11.3m] bid for Sassuolo striker Gregoire Defrel.
The Eagles have identified a new striker as their top priority this month and have been linked with a number of names, including Juventus ace Simone Zaza and Fiorentina’s Khouma Babacar.
Di Marzio’s report, however, suggests that Alan Pardew’s side have lost out in their bid to land those two and have instead now opted to focus their attentions on Defrel.
The French-born striker only joined the Italian outfit last summer and has managed two goals in his last 16 league appearances – a ratio which doesn't exactly scream out prolific.
Nonetheless, fresh reports claim that Palace will send scouts to check him out against Inter this weekend ahead of a sizeable planned bid of €15 million [£11.3m].
“Crystal Palace are signaling their strong intentions by laying out an offer of €15 million for the player. After losing out on Babacar and Zaza, Defrel is the latest of the Serie A transfer targets that Crystal Palace will hope to bring to Sellhurst Park,” Di Marzio’s report reads.
Despite his apparent lack of goals, Defrel does possess a number of key standout attributes such as his strength on the ball, his hold-up play and his ability to dribble out of tight spots.
The 24-year-old is predominately a centre-forward though he often drifts out to a wide right position, linking up with his teammates and taking on a more of a creative role for the team.
Palace are going strong in the Premier League, and with the addition of a top striker a potential finish in a European spot is very much a realistic possibility come the end of the season.
