Jason Roberts on where Newcastle need to strengthen this month

Newcastle United need to make some additions this month.

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts says Newcastle United need to bolster their defensive ranks this month as they face a fight to preserve their Premier League status.

Tasked with analysing Newcastle’s season thus far by the official Premier League website, Roberts was asked a series of questions including where the Magpies need to strengthen this month.

With only 19 league goals scored in 20 matches, most would probably have said the striker department yet Roberts feels they must shore up their defence and highlights that as their January priority.

“I think a defender would be a good acquisition. Their defence is not at the level needed to be at,” he explained.

While short and sweet, it seems a fair enough comment as Newcastle’s 35 goals conceded thus far is only four goals better off than the Premier League’s worst, North East rivals Sunderland.

One of the Magpies’ leading problems is the way in which they play. Boss Steve McClaren wants them to get the ball down and play it, building their attacks from the back.

While in the long-run that may prove beneficial, in the short-term it could be costly as a number of players are integrating themselves into the team and confidence was still low from last season’s mess.

Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba have been the two main centre-backs this season, with one very much in his twilight years and the other inexperienced at the very top level.

It’s certainly an area for improvement, though their lack of goals may prompt the club to seek a new striker before attempting to bring in another centre-back later in the transfer window.
