The West Ham co-owner also praised two other members of his squad.
Indeed, the 28-year-old Frenchman has made a marked impact at Upton Park so far this season and Gold is tipping him to make a huge impact on West Ham history.
Payet returned to action during the 2-0 Premier League win over Liverpool, although he is not yet fully match fit.
Gold said in his 'From the Boardroom' column: "To top things off we then see Dimitri Payet back in action and what more can I say about him.
"He can become an all-time great and a legend at West Ham United. He has all the attributes of the great players we have had at this special football club over the years."
He added: "It does give other players the chance to shine and the best example of that has been Michail Antonio who was man of the match against Southampton and produced another great display against Liverpool.
"James Collins was also outstanding and he was my man of the match against Liverpool. He has continued his great form this season and you could not ask for more passion and determination that he gives you during a game."
The performances of some of West Ham's stand-in stars have prompted a relaxed attitude from the club's owners in January. While there was a big panic among some fans heading into August's Deadline Day, the atmosphere is one of calm at Upton Park right now.
There has been plenty of squad depth on show in east London in recent weeks and Gold will no doubt hope that can be rewarded with a top-six finish and a solid FA Cup run.
