BBC pundit Clive Allen reacts to Aston Villa’s FA Cup draw

Trinity Road Stand - Aston Villa

Aston Villa drew 1-1 away at Wycombe Wanderers.

Former West Ham United striker Clive Allen says Aston Villa lacked Premier League quality as they were held to a 1-1 draw at League Two opponents Wycombe Wanderers, the BBC reports.

Micah Richards put Villa ahead but they were pegged back early in the second period as the hosts dispatched a penalty following a much debated call by the referee.

Wycombe had chances to win it, and despite not being able to pull off a third round shock they will look forward to a replay at Villa Park and the financial rewards which come with it.

As for Villa, it was another winless match for Remi Garde and BBC Five Live reporter Clive Allen lamented their quality, saying: "You can understand the frustration and disappointment of the Aston Villa fans.”

"Villa dealt with the onslaught at the beginning of the first half and took the lead. Wycombe came out the same way in the second half and got their equaliser. The draw is a fair result.”

"Villa did not show the Premier League skill or ability. It looked at one point they had control of the game but that quickly disappeared. As soon as they conceded, they did not recover from that.”

Villa currently preside over a 19-game winless run in the Premier League, though in spite of their poor form many suggested that they should have enough quality to see off their lowly opponents.

As it happened, they could count themselves quite fortuitous not to have been beaten on a day where the underdogs really rose to the challenge and put on a fine display.

The Villains need a victory, and their return fixture at Villa Park could be a potential disaster for them.
