According to a recent report by Talksport, Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has been linked with a move away from the club following a lack of first-team opportunities.
Vermaelen featured just once in the entire 2014/15 campaign, on the final day of the season, and he hasn’t appeared much more this season – making just four league starts – despite being fully fit.
Competition for places is seemingly the 30-year-old’s biggest obstacle with Barca, and with the European Championships just around the corner he needs to be playing more regularly.
Speculation has linked him with a move to Lazio, but one club who could ideally do with bolstering their defensive ranks is his former club Arsenal.
A return to the Emirates may seem a little farfetched, yet it’s arguably a deal which would suit both parties as Vermaelen needs games and Arsenal need an extra option amid their injury troubles.
Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers are Arsenal’s current four centre-back options yet there remains plenty of reservations over the latter three.
Many Premier League pundits and observers feel at least one more top class centre-back would prove significant in Arsenal’s bid to win the title, and Vermaelen certainly fits the bill.
The 30-year-old Belgium international is injury free and still playing at a high standard, making him an extremely desirable option for a number of top clubs this month.
