According to a report in the Daily Mail, Spanish giants Real Madrid have joined the race to sign Everton’s John Stones on the recommendation of former boss Rafa Benitez.
The talented England international defender has risen to prominence over the past 18 months, first breaking in to the Everton team and later producing eye-catching displays.
Chelsea’s interest in the summer was well documented, while former teammate Phil Neville told the Liverpool Echo how Stones could even play for Barcelona or Bayern Munich.
His reputation as a fabulous ball-playing centre-back is growing by the day, and now fresh reports accredit arguably the world’s biggest club Real Madrid as a contender for his signature.
“Real Madrid have joined the race to sign John Stones after Rafa Benitez urged the club to snap up a player who he believes is one of the best young defenders in Europe,” the Daily Mail report reads.
The 21-year-old has undoubted ability and his vast potential could lead to him becoming one of Europe’s best centre-backs in the future, a situation which seemingly interests Madrid.
The La Liga giants currently boast an array of world class talent but in recent years they’ve started to broaden their search methods in order to sign and develop leading youngsters.
A potential centre-back pairing of Stones and Raphael Varane has the makings of something quite special.
