Report: Juventus chief rules out move for Ilkay Gundogan

Liverpool remain linked with the midfield star, so they may have one fewer competitor.

Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta has ruled out a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, reports Tuttosport.

The Italian champions were thought to be one of several sides chasing the German star, and were reportedly eyeing a move for him in January, as reported by Sportmediaset.

However, it seems that was never the case, with Marotta claiming that the Germany international is not one of the names they have been discussing as possible signings.

"Why would we go after Gundogan if we already have Marchisio?" he told Tuttosport.

"We have a number of solutions in the area of the pitch, but Gundogan is not one of the names we have been discussing. Others have been linking him with Juventus.”

That news could come as a big boost to Liverpool, who were also rumoured to be interested in signing Gundogan by Sportmediaset.

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen to add players to his squad in January, with his side currently lacking in quality in several areas.

That had led him to identify Gundogan, with Klopp thought to be pushing hard to secure his former Borussia Dortmund star.

A big stumbling block to that move was likely to be Juventus though, with the Italians a more attractive option given their ability to offer Champions League football.

With the Italians not interested however, the path is now clear for Liverpool to make a move, although the reported £22million asking price and Dortmund’s reluctance to sell are still stumbling blocks to any move.
