The former Liverpool midfielder is backing the youngster to go right to the top of the game.
A recent poll showed that fans of the Catalan giants want the 21-year-old to be the club's main target during the January window (via The Sun), and Murphy sees no reason why the former Barnsley man can't make the step up to the Nou Camp.
"He is potentially the best centre-half we've ever had," Murphy said, as reported in The Sun.
"I think he is going to be anything he wants to be. He's a Barcelona player in waiting."
Despite his tender age, Stones has already made over 60 Premier League appearances, and should arguably be Roy Hodgson's first choice centre-back when it comes to naming his squad for this summer's European Championships.
And he certainly does not appear to be lacking in confidence as he showed during the Toffees' recent clash with Tottenham when he performed three Cruyff turns, including one amazingly in his own six-yard box.
However, a move to Spain during this window would probably come too early for the youngster. Barcelona currently have a selection of fantastic defenders to choose from, and Stones potentially faces spending too much time on the sidelines when the best thing for him at the moment is to be constantly playing.
But he is showing attributes that suggest that he would fit into Barcelona's team perfectly in the future. He is already keen to bring the ball out of defence rather than clearing it long, and has shown on many occasions this season that he is able to thread an excellent pass if required.
