Birmingham City have agreed a loan deal to sign Sunderland winger Will Buckley in the January transfer window, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Sunderland are willing to let Buckley move on as he does not figure in Sam Allardyce's long-term plans at the Stadium of Light.
Allardyce is looking to offload several fringe players in order to raise some money for his own transfer plans in this month's transfer window.
Buckley has failed to figure Sunderland's first team this season, having not been named in the Black Cats' 25-man Premier League squad.
The 26-year-old joined Championhip outfit Leeds United in October, but saw his spell at Elland Road cut short in November after just one start and three substitute appearances.
A number of clubs have been credited with an interest in Buckley, but Birmingham are in pole position to land the former Brighton & Hove Albion star.
Birmingham boss Gary Rowett has identified Buckley as the ideal replacement for Demarai Gray following his move to Leicester City earlier this month.
The Blues are hopeful of tying up a deal for Buckley in the next few days as Rowett looks to fill the void left by Gray's departure.
