The 28-year-old striker has travelled to England today to seal the deal with the seventh placed Championship side, with the report claiming Wednesday originally wanted to sign him last January.
However, no deal could be confirmed, and Nikolics remained with Videoton in his homeland until the summer. He then switched to Polish giants Legia Warsaw over the summer, and the Hungarian international has been in prolific form this term.
36 games have brought a return of 24 goals, with Nikolics netting 21 in 21 league games for a perfect goals-to-game ratio. His form has Nikolics regarded as one of the most in form hitmen in Europe, and Wednesday are close to securing him in the coming days.
Nikolics will bring an added goal threat to the side who are hoping to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League, and have already completed some major transfers this season.
There are no indications as to whether the deal is a permanent or loan transfer, but the Owls will be improving their chances of getting back to the top flight when they finally secure Nikolics’ services.
