Relegation battlers Aston Villa and Sunderland are battling it out to sign Everton midfielder Darron Gibson, report SkySports.
Gibson is available for loan along with Aiden McGeady, and the duo are both interested in doing a deal this month.
The central midfielder is keen to play regularly ahead of Euro 2016, and to earn a place in the Republic of Ireland squad.
Injuries have meant Gibson has had a stop start season, and he has not featured in a Premier League game since December 12, and has not started in the division at all, with each of his four appearances coming as a substitute.
Both Villa and Sunderland could do with his experience in the middle of the park, with his long range shooting having the potential to make an impact on games.
Gibson is now 28 and it seems a long time since he broke through as a youngster at Manchester United, and it is easy to forget he even scored in a Champions League semi-final in 2011.
He needs a move for a fresh start, and while neither Villa or Sunderland are in promising league positions, the fact they both have something to play for should act as extra motivation if he needed it.
