Paul Merson has told SkySports he has his reservations over Mohamed Elneny if he signs for Arsenal.
A deal is thought to be close to completion with The Mail reporting he has completed a medical and is awaiting approval of a work permit.
The Egyptian is a defensive midfielder and is hoping to complete a £5 million move from Swiss side Basel, where he has played in the Champions League.
Despite this, Merson admits he is underwhelmed at the prospect of his addition, and is worried he will not make much impact early on.
He said: "I thought they would go for a real key signing.
"Someone for £30m-odd. I think it's about £5m, I don't think he'll go straight in the team, he'll be a squad player for the games coming up.
"It depends how quickly he settles."
Arsenal are top of the Premier League and aiming to win their first title in more than a decade, and big transfer moves this January will help push them closer to the trophy.
This though has rarely been manager Arsene Wenger's style, and it is unclear if he will be doing any more business in the transfer window after Elneny's deal is completed.
