Everton beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening.
Muhamed Besic has told the Liverpool Echo that Roberto Martinez’s team talk focused around the importance of Everton winning the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final tie against Manchester City last night.
Everton hosted City at Goodison Park, and they picked up a 2-1 win in the contest to give themselves a lead to protect in the second leg.
The Toffees put in an excellent performance to seal the victory, which puts them in a good position to make it to Wembley.
And Besic said: “The gaffer told us before the game to see the first leg as just one game, and that we needed to win. So it was really important to win this first game.”
Everton scored their first goal in the match through Ramiro Funes Mori, but they were pegged back when Jesus Navas finished off a wonderful counter attack.
The Toffees proved their character after that strike though, as they restored their advantage almost immediately when Romelu Lukaku powered home a header to continue his excellent form.
Everton then held on to claim a vital victory, which will give them plenty of confidence ahead of their second leg against City at the end of the month.
The winner of Everton’s tie against Manuel Pellegrini’s side will meet either Stoke City or Liverpool at Wembley in February.
