Liverpool media round-up: Subotic emerges as target, Allen on his future

Anfield Pitch

A selection of the latest stories in the media involving Liverpool Football Club this Thursday morning.

Liverpool will try and sign a new centre-back on loan this January in order to ease their injury crisis in defence, with The Times reporting that Borussia Dortmund's Neven Subotic is a target for such a deal given Jurgen Klopp's relationship with the player.

Their report states that having targeted Joel Matip from Schalke for a summer move, the Reds find little value in recruiting someone on a permanent basis during this window, but Dortmund are unlikely to entertain such an offer - suggesting the Bundesliga side are unlikely to sanction a temporary move at this stage of the season.

The Liverpool Echo's report seems to be in line with that of The Times, saying the club will seek more experience at the back, even if Tiago Ilori does have his loan at Aston Villa cancelled.

Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren are all ruled out of tomorrow night's FA Cup third round tie at Exeter City, while Liverpool expect to discover the extent of injuries picked up by Lovren and Philippe Coutinho from Tuesday's League Cup win over Stoke City today.

In order to add more depth to the squad following these injuries, the Liverpool Echo is among those that report that Sheyi Ojo has been recalled from his loan spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ojo - who has made 17 appearances for Wolves this season - is likely to return in time to be part of the squad for the trip to Exeter.

The Echo also reports that Joe Allen has said he is fighting for his future at the club, after saying that talks over a potential new contract have gone quiet.

Allen put in an impressive performance in Tuesday night's win over Stoke City but has not been a regular under Jurgen Klopp.

He's quoted, saying: “From my point of view it is about knuckling down, doing my job and giving my best, which I always do.”
