Burnley midfielder Joey Barton said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (January 4) that Christian Benteke does not fit in at Liverpool.
The former Newcastle United midfielder stated that Benteke is another version of West Ham United striker Andy Carroll.
“He doesn’t fit,” said Barton. “He is basically another version of Andy Carroll. Andy’s very good if given service, crosses coming into the box. You are asking him to do a role that is alien to him.”
Benteke joined Liverpool from Aston Villa in the summer of 2015. The Belgium international is a proven Premier League striker, but he is struggling for goals at the moment.
The 25-year-old has scored just six goals and created 19 chances in 17 league appearances so far this season. The former Genk star is struggling to adapt to the style of football that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp wants to play.
Carroll is also facing a similar problem at West Ham, who are currently being managed by Slaven Bilic. The England international striker, though, is scoring goals and is making some impact.
The former Newcastle striker, who has struggled with injury problems throughout his time at West Ham, has scored three goals and created five chances in 12 Premier League games so far this campaign.
