As it stands after the first legs of the Capital One Cup semi-finals, Everton and Liverpool are on course to face each other in the final at Wembley.
Liverpool beat Stoke City 1-0 on Tuesday night before last night's fixture, which saw Everton defeat Manchester City 2-1.
There could and may well be a dramatic turnaround in both or either game in the second leg, although Liverpool have the luxury of playing at home, and Everton must visit Manchester City.
The matches take place in three weeks time, but already potential anticipation about a huge Merseyside derby is beginning to build, potentially the biggest since the FA Cup semi-final between the two teams in 2012.
Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher is already nervous at the prospect, and commented on Twitter in light of Everton's victory.
Only half time but great result & 2nd half performance from EFC. Still a lot to play for but the thought of a LFC/EFC final making me sick!— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) January 6, 2016
Liverpool won that cup semi-final against Everton, and have had real success against their rivals in recent years, but if they meet in the final the stakes will be higher than ever, and freescoring striker Romelu Lukaku could have a field day against their banged up defence.
