Hasbro to release Star Wars Monopoly with Rey after #WheresRey campaign

Toy company announces a new edition of the board game to include Rey following days of fan complaints surrounding the lead character’s omission

Hasbro have announced an edition of their Star Wars themed Monopoly game featuring lead character Rey will be released later this year. The about-turn follows days of fan outrage surrounding the character’s omission from the game.

The announcement was posted on Hasbro’s Twitter account on Wednesday.

The version currently for sale features the four character tokens of Finn, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. On Tuesday, Hasbro claimed its controversial move to omit Star Wars: The Force Awakens hero Rey from the game was motivated by a desire to avoid spoiling JJ Abrams’ film.

“The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie’s release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance,” a spokesperson for Hasbro explained. (As has been pointed out previously, however, Rey does not join the Rebel Alliance, which featured in the original trilogy, but a successor group referred to as the Resistance.)

However, fans were quick to point out that Rey featured heavily in the film’s posters and trailer, and major plot points could have been avoided by featuring the character with her staff rather than a lightsaber. Hasbro’s explanation was further undermined by their apparent lack of concern about spoiling the plot line of Finn, who featured in the trailers as a stormtrooper.

The game is the latest in a line of official merchandise that has drawn ire for prioritising less prominent male characters over Rey.

A Hasbro toy version of the Millennium Falcon is accompanied by Chewbacca, Finn and BB-8 figurines, and a Target figurine pack has Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, Finn, Poe Dameron, a stormtrooper and a TIE fighter pilot.

A trending hashtag, #WheresRey, has been charting the absence of Rey from chain store shelves selling the film’s official merchandise. Similar complaints have been made about the difficulties of finding other female action hero figurines, including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow from the Avengers movies and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the highest-grossing film in US box office history, without adjusting for inflation, topping the $760.5m (£520.36m) earned by James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009.
