Carlos Carvalhal insists Sheffield Wednesday will be taking FA Cup seriously

The Owls face Championship rivals Fulham in the third round of the competition.

Carlos Carvalhal has insisted that Sheffield Wednesday will be taking the FA Cup very seriously ahead of their third round clash with Fulham, the Sheffield Star reports.

The Owls find themselves right in the Championship play-off mix with their victory last weekend - which was also against their cup opponents - leaving them two points off the top six, but Carvalhal has dismissed the suggestion that the club will be solely focusing on their league form.

"I don't care if it is the Capital One Cup or FA Cup. It is the next game so we have a responsibility to defend the Wednesday colours," he told the Star.

"We have to be professional and we will do our best to do well in the competition."

With Wednesday 7th in the table - and with a lengthy injury list - the Portuguese would be forgiven for choosing to field a much weakened side for Saturday's tie at Hillsborough.

However, their impressive Capital One Cup run earlier in the campaign - where they knocked out Premier League opposition on two occasions by beating Newcastle and Arsenal - has proved that progress in the cup can have a positive impact on a side's season.

Provided a cup run does not result in further injuries, it allows for teams to maintain a winning mentality that can benefit their league form. And Carvalhal is clearly hoping that a run in the FA Cup will aid their hopes of securing a play-off spot.
