Secure Champions League football; Tottenham have excellent chance to land expensive striker Alexandre Lacazette

Alexandre Lacazette

Tottenham should make a move for Alexandre Lacazette this summer.

Interest is mounting in Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, with L'Equipe reporting Newcastle have submitted an offer for his services.

The France international is considered an outstanding prospect, who at 24, is ready to kick on to the next level. Newcastle's bid is doomed to failure, with the club lacking the profile Lacazette desires for his next move, and the French side unwilling to sell mid-season.

There is a very real chance he will move on this summer, with Lyon particularly disappointing this season, currently in ninth position in the table. With only the top three qualifying for Champions League spots, the club face a tall order to hang onto the frontman.

A club trending in the opposite direction in the Premier League is Tottenham, who are performing at a level Newcastle can only aspire to right now, despite suffering a surprise loss to the Toon last month.

That is one of only two games Spurs have lost in the league all season, currently in fourth place in the Premier League, and on course to secure Champions League football.

Their one weakness is a lack of depth up front, and back up for Harry Kane needs to be bought this January, but if they can think long-term, then Lacazette is the perfect addition for them to make in the summer, when he may be available at the right price.

This is why Spurs need a stop gap solution up front now, with the best forwards unlikely to be available mid-season, and having Champions League football on offer will make them a particularly attractive destination, where he could join his former Lyon teammate Hugo Lloris.

Lacazette netted 27 goals last season, and is behind that schedule this campaign with eight for his club, and also netting in an international game for France.

With Euro 2016 on the horizon, the striker could become one of Europe's hottest properties if he performs well at the tournament, and while this would have made him previously unattainable for Tottenham, having Champions League football will unlock the door to being able to spend more money, and attract the best players - which is only added reason why they need to ensure they do not let the attainable target slip from their grasp.
