Caulker has endured a torrid time this season, having linked up with Southampton on a year-long loan from QPR over the summer.
He has been afforded few chances, making just eight appearances in all, and when taking to the field he has struggled. His nadir was undoubtedly the 6-1 League Cup loss to Liverpool, when Caulker was given the run around by the Reds attack every single time they moved into the final third.
Despite his poor form, Pardew wants to bring the 24-year-old centre-back to Selhurst Park, having seen his team’s defensive frailties at times this season. It is believed that Caulker is seen as the long-term replacement for 34-year-old stalwart Damien Delaney, who is to be phased out of the team over the rest of the season.
There are no indication as to whether Pardew wants to bring Caulker in on a permanent or loan deal, but the manager believes he is the man to aid Caulker’s return to the kind of form he had shown in the earlier stages of his career.
