Despite fan criticism, Tom Carroll's rise is no surprise - he looked good as far back as pre-season

Tom Carroll low quality

The 23-year-old midfielder has been lauded after a good performance for Tottenham - but it comes as no shock!

After Tom Carroll's display against Everton on Sunday, the praise poured in for the young Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

Many fans seemed surprised. And one headline even read 'Carroll is like a new signing.'

But why?

The Tottenham midfielder looked good as far back as pre-season, when he returned from his loan spell at Swansea City. In the north London side's post-season friendly in summer, he ran the show. He then delivered another good performance or so and the promise was clear.

Granted, Carroll has endured some poor-ish cameos this season. The 23-year-old has made 10 Premier League appearances this term for Spurs - few would have noticed until the Everton game.

But Tottenham fans should know more than most that patience is key. Mauricio Pochettino has shown patience with several of his players, just as the club have done with him. It's paid off in most cases and looks as though it has with Carroll, too.

The midfielder is a good player with a bright future. Any criticism of him during a few average showings was unfair. He showed what he can do against Everton and that display was no surprise.

He might not become Spurs' shining light - there is already plenty of quality through the middle at White Hart Lane. But Carroll can offer plenty. And his rise is far from a shock.
