Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Robbie Savage has claimed that Aston Villa should hire Nigel Pearson for the Championship, if the club make no improvement under Remi Garde for the remainder of this season.
Savage said: “If you can see a development and an improvement in the players, why not give him [Garde] a chance to bring them back up [to the Premier League]. If that doesn’t happen, [bring in] Nigel Pearson or someone like that. I’d go for Nigel Pearson.”
Savage has not yet written off Garde, claiming that if Villa show improvement over the next few months he deserves a chance to bring them back up from the Championship.
However, if the Midlands side remain on their current trajectory, Savage would see Garde out of his job before the start of next season, with Nigel Pearson replacing him.
Pearson has been out of work since the summer, having left Leicester City, and it is a surprise that he has yet to be appointed anywhere else. He took the Foxes out of the Championship in impressive fashion, and kept them in the top flight with an exceptional run of form in the second half of last season.
Both Championship and Premier League clubs have surely looked at hiring him due to his record, and Savage believes that he would be a wise appointment to aid Villa in getting out of the Championship as soon as possible.
There are no indications as to whether Garde will stay on at Villa if they are relegated, but the club could do much worse than move for Pearson if the Frenchman does leave.
