Could Arsenal be about to sign a new midfielder this month?
A recent report from the Daily Mail claimed the Egyptian had already undergone a medical and a £5million move had been agreed. But five days into the January transfer window and there is yet to be any official word from either club.
That said, Basel’s latest message suggests they are preparing for Elneny’s exit and the midfielder – who is predominantly a holding player but can also operate further forward if required – could prove to be an astute addition if and when he does finally arrive.
He has already scored six goals and provided two assists in 28 matches for Basel this season, so he could add more attacking threat despite being brought in seemingly as an alternative to Francis Coquelin.
Only time will tell, but it seems the Gunners are closing in on making their first big announcement of the latest transfer window.
