According to the Daily Mirror, Wolverhampton Wanderers are unable to afford Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson.
Wolves had wanted to sign Williamson on a permanent deal from Newcastle in the January transfer window, but the Premier League club are demanding a high price for the 33-year-old.
Although the rangy centre back has not played much this season, Steve McClaren is reportedly determined not to lose him on the cheap.
Williamson had impressed on a loan move with Wolves earlier in the campaign, but the Midlands outfit are refusing to meet Newcastle’s asking price.
As a result, Wolves have turned their attentions elsewhere, as they aim to strengthen their backline.
Kenny Jackett’s men have leaked goals throughout the campaign so far, and they have identified Bolton Wanderers defender Dorian Dervite as a potential addition.
Dervite has played a key role for Bolton this season, but the Trotters are under pressure to sell, due to their financial troubles, and Wolves are expected to make a bid over the coming days.
