Did Newcastle United spend their money wisely in the summer?
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has criticised top clubs for overlooking English talent, insisting claims players are overpriced is a myth.
He believes there is good value to be had if sides are prepared to look around, and has used Newcastle United as one side which he believes did not spend wisely.
Asked by a Newcastle United fan whether QPR's Charlie Austin would have outscored Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic so far this season he agreed, and also named two more players who he feels would have done better.
@DMAC102 I'm a toon fan Darragh, we've spent 13m on mitrovic when we could've spent the same on Austin and gotten us a 20+ Prem scorer!!— Ed Batt (@EdBatt7) January 4, 2016
Correct or on Gayle or Rhodes or others who would have more goals then him already. https://t.co/68bjkkvJeq— Darragh MacAnthony (@DMAC102) January 4, 2016
Dwight Gayle has struggled for opportunities at Crystal Palace this season, but has shone previously in the top flight, while Jordan Rhodes has been consistent as ever for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.
Mitrovic has scored three goals in 12 starts and four more substitute appearances for Newcastle this season, also sent off once.
He is just 21 and long term may well prove to be a better player than any of the three discussed, but with Newcastle sitting in 18th place in the Premier League, they need results now, and to that end it is fair to argue that in the short term the club may have been better off with Charlie Austin.
